Vision of the world’s smartest hospital
Oulu University Hospital OYS is one of the five university hospitals in Finland. Its vision is to be the smartest hospital in the world in terms of technology, professional expertise and facilities once the renovation is completed.
With the OYS 2030 renovation program, the operations and facilities of Oulu University Hospital will be transformed to meet future needs. The renovation program has set tough targets and savings in energy costs, for example, are estimated to be as high as around 50%.
The renovation will take place in stages. The first phase, the A and B buildings of the nuclear hospital, is the responsibility of two alliances. The first phase of the new buildings is scheduled for completion by the end of 2023.
Aro Systems is the HVAC contractor in the alliance responsible for Building A. In addition to heated external grilles and exhaust diffusers, ETS NORD will supply smoke extraction ducts and smoke control dampers to the hospital’s A building. As new buildings rise while the old hospital is still in operation, site logistics need to be well planned. Deliveries must be scheduled accurately and in the correct order to ensure that work runs smoothly, without unnecessary interruptions.
Regional Sales Manager Jens Rönnqvist from ETS NORD says that ETS NORD’s smoke control ducts are CE-marked products and that efforts have been made to make their installation as simple as possible. Smoke control ducts are made as customization work, and Rönnqvist says that the duct sections are numbered to make the installer’s job easier. – There are a lot of installers at work on such a big construction site, and I think that the sticker on the side of the duct telling about the installation order is something that the installer appreciates, he says.
Veli-Pekka Kotikumpu, HVAC project manager at Aro Systems, who is responsible for installing the smoke control ductwork, considers it a great improvement that ETS NORD’s smoke control ducts can be connected with sealing tape, which makes the installer’s work cleaner when the use of pulp can be avoided.
Jouni Kakkuri from Aro Systems, who is responsible for OYS’s construction site, is satisfied with the service he received with the deliveries. – We received design assistance and support from ETS NORD for product selection, and for example, preliminary plans for structural and architectural design were made for the large-scale outdoor grilles, he says. – Deliveries have arrived on time. Overall, ETS NORD’s technical support and ordering and delivery processes work very well, Kakkuri praises.
